ON paper, the idea of wearing a skirt over trousers may send shivers of horror down your spine – recollections of dubious all-in-one skirt and trouser ensembles from the mid-Nineties lurch to mind.

But fear not, before you break out in cold sweats, take a look at the autumn/winter 2012-13 catwalks for inspiration. Long gone are the days of skorts (culottes masquerading as skirts), this time around the trend has grown up and got sophisticated. You know when an idea crops up on the runways of Marc Jacobs, Prada, Louis Vuitton and Chanel it’s going to be hard to ignore.

At Louis Vuitton, heavy wool dresses almost reached model’s ankles, leaving only a hint of trouser leg peeking out below hem lines, while Miuccia Prada embellished jewelled coloured felt A-line skirts with oversized gems. Raf Simons drove the message home with his debut Couture collection for Christian Dior, pairing neat little puff ball dresses and strapless gowns, split at the front to the waist, over perfectly tailored black cigarette trousers.

Skirt-trouser dressing is no passing gimmick; designers including Roksanda Ilincic and Marc Jacobs have rolled the concept forwards into their pre-spring/summer 2013 collections. Top tip? A tunic over narrow trousers is the easiest way to wear this trend – it’s more streamlined than having the waistband of a skirt and trousers sitting on top of each other.
