EVERY now and then a trend comes along that works not only as a directional style statement, but as one with actual functionality. The synergy of covetable aesthetics underpinned with purpose is too intoxicating – and let’s face it, rare – to ignore.

Supersized handbags hold the key to this elusive fashion conundrum. They look fabulous and in this supersize scale your hard-earned purchase will be hard to miss – but even better, their maxed-out capacity means they can hold all of your worldly possessions.

The autumn/winter 2012-13 runways were full of models carting big and beautiful bags. At Louis Vuitton, the sequinned, leather-trimmed travel bags were so big that they came carried by their own porter who walked alongside each model. Fendi offered contrasting coloured doctor’s bags in felted wool, pony skin and corduroy. If retro styling is your thing, take a note from Marc Jacob’s book who reworked old-school leather gym bags in block colours. Or, if you’re feeling bold, go the way of Blumarine where slouchy beanbag sized-handbags were coordinated with outfits of neon shearling and leopard print.

Long gone are the days when the trappings on a bag – tassels, charms, trinkets – were the measure of status; Narciso Rodriguez‘s top-fastening tan bag was an exercise in purity and stream-lined design.
